The women of Liberia eventually decided this violence and lawlessness had to stop. A Christian laywoman named Leymah Gbowee emerged as the leader. She was motivated to action by a dream in which God told her to “gather the women and pray for peace.”24 It is significant but not surprising that this movement was led and developed by women. Christianity in Africa is largely a female enterprise. In most churches on Sunday morning, women outnumber men by two or three or sometimes ten or twenty to one.
